The truth has finally come out. (Spoiler alert — Don’t put your fingers in your ears!) Clemson Murn is a butterfly.

On Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 6, “Murn After Reading,” more information is revealed about the butterflies, including who Murn is occupied by and why he’s fighting against them.

Truthfully, “Murn After Reading” feels like quite a bit of dominoes being set up. Though still filled with the banter, outrageous humor, and action sequences that Peacemaker fans have come to expect, “Murn After Reading” has a mainly expository purpose.

If setting up for what’s to come is the main purpose of “Murn After Reading,” then what’s to come is particularly epic. The butterflies have taken over the police, August Smith is out for blood, and all out war seems imminent for our titular hero and his band of misfits.

An unfortunate side effect of all the table setting on “Murn After Reading” is simply that viewers get less of what makes the series truly special. Luckily, it’s still there.

The jokes are still landing. In fact, Peacemaker trying to answer questions from elementary aged kids is one of the funniest scenes on Peacemaker so far. Plus, Jamil (Rizwan Manji) is back, which enhances any comedy scene.

Student: Why is your pet’s name so unoriginal?

Peacemaker: Why are you my least favorite kid in this class?

The action sequences are still exciting, too! Vigilante and Peacemaker attempting to flee the trailer is a masterfully tense action scene. One of the best the show has done.

And that “Monster” montage? Phenomenal.

Even the growth and depth of character is still evident on “Murn After Reading.” It’s easy to tell how far Peacemaker has come as a character, and both Harcourt and Leota show noticeable signs of growth. Leota’s conflict after planting that diary is especially powerful.

If all that is true, then what’s missing?

Simple — because after all the table setting on “Murn After Reading” — there just isn’t enough of all the (aforementioned) elements that truly make Peacemaker great. Those elements are ever-present, but diminished.

So “Murn After Reading” strikes a good balance, but the forward focus can be distracting from the show’s best elements. Hopefully when the season concludes and is a finished product, the ending will paint it in a better light.

A few stray thoughts
  • I don’t know why the cops were so stuck on Peacemaker when they should’ve been looking for the Hamburglar.
  • The line about Waller not being trustworthy was a lightbulb moment for me. I think she’s pulling all the strings. She’s sending Murn, Economos, Harcourt, and Peacemaker to go down with the ship.
  • The comedic stylings of John Cena and Freddie Stroma never get old.
  • Today in surprising minor details: Peacemaker seems to know his way around a piano.
  • It seems a little glossed over when Peacemaker admits he doesn’t want to kill people, but it’s a very powerful moment.
